Department Overview

PG&E's Vegetation Management department manages 600+ tree crews and 350+ utility foresters with an operating budget of over $450M.  Primary objectives are to ensure public safety, system reliability and regulatory compliance by managing vegetation on approximately 80,000 miles of overhead distribution line and 18,000 miles of transmission line across PG&E service area.


Position Summary

The Senior Vegetation Program Manager is responsible for oversight of Vegetation Management operations, ensuring electric system safety, reliability and regulatory compliance with state and federal rules. The incumbent may also serve as a subject matter expert and provide guidance and education or influence leaders in the industry (PG&E, other utilities or other decision makers) on regulatory issues and program strategies. Leads team across a broad geographic area of operations, including, direct oversight of 50+ inspection and tree contractor personnel. Works with customers and public entities to monitor and manage vegetation proximity to PG&E assets to contribute to system reliability and safety objectives.


The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for executing PG&E’s orchard program – which manages and removes commercial almond and walnut orchards from within PG&E’s transmission rights-of-way – as well as supporting other activities specific to Transmission Vegetation Management operations.


Contingent on work space availability, work locations may be considered throughout or in close proximity to Central Valley, CA (i.e.Fresno, Merced, Chico, Stockton, Grass Valley, Angels Camp, Rocklin, Sacramento, West Sacramento, Vacaville, Davis and/or San Ramon, etc.)


Job Responsibilities

  • Works independently to solve moderate to complex problems and takes new perspectives on existing solutions, plans, and goals.
  • Leads project teams.
  • Provides direction on overall program plan and goals within a specific functional area of operations. Delivers on the program implementation plan.
  • Develops new and ad-hoc reports, summarizes findings and recommendations and provides business insight to various levels of management.
  • Works with managers and directors across lines of business to influence decisions and meet goals.
  • Communicates complex ideas to diverse audiences (PG&E, other utilities, public entities, community organizations, etc.), using a variety of media.
  • Provides guidance around complex industry regulatory and compliance environment and considerations.
  •  Contributes to implementation and creation of new concepts, processes and ideas to further VM program advancement.
  • May participate in public hearings, legal proceedings or similar in support of the subject matter expert; may be the subject matter expert.
  • Develops budget forecasts and business cases.
  • Conducts analysis in support of identifying budget variances and solutions to address.




  • Bachelor degree in Forestry, Business, Agriculture or related field or equivalent related work experience
  • 5 years of job-related experience
  • Experience in vegetation management
  • Valid CA driver’s license or ability to obtain by 1st day of hire
  • Ability to travel up to 50% throughout northern and central, CA



  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist/Utility Specialist
  • Knowledge of electric transmission and distribution systems
  • Excellent organizational, time management, prioritization and planning skills
  • Experience working with government officials  
  • Expert knowledge of forestry and/or utility vegetation management concepts, methods, techniques and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
