The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is an agency recognized worldwide for being a leader in public health. The bureau is responsible for registering and certifying all births, deaths, spontaneous and induced terminations of pregnancy in NYC. The bureau issues, analyzes and reports on 285,00 vital events each year. The Bureau is a very large customer service operations, providing death certification services on a 24/7 basis, issuing more than 900,000 certified copies of birth and death records, and fulfilling hundreds of data requests annually. The Bureau of Vital Statistics (BVS) is recruiting for a Clerical Associates, Level-III position.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

- Reviews all birth certificates and Acknowledgement of Paternity forms submitted electronically.
- Determines records that are acceptable for filing.
- Registers all birth certificates in an electronic registration system.
- Contacts hospital staff when birth records or paternity forms cannot be registered.
- Generate birth and Acknowledgement of Paternity reconciliation reports.
- Assisting the general public with the purchase of a birth certificate by helping with the application and reviewing the identification.
- Deliver excellent customer service, including resolving and addressing in-person and telephone customer inquiries.
- Answer and respond to telephone inquiries from other City, State and Federal agencies.
- Review work and establish procedures to ensure completion; take corrective actions and establish strategic plan for improvement.
- Perform other related clerical support functions as assigned.
Minimum Qual Requirements Qualification Requirements
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of satisfactory clerical experience.
Skills Requirement
Keyboard familiarity with the ability to type at a minimum of 100 key strokes (20 words) per minute.
Preferred Skills Experience with computerized systems; Knowledge of detailed record keeping systems; ability to work

Under pressure; excellent oral, written, administrative and interpersonal skills.
