The Mental Health Specialist works under the direction of the Unit Charge Nurse. This position is responsible for gathering and reporting observational data, providing direct patient care to assigned patients, implementing therapeutic interventions and emotional support for patient during hospitalization on the acute care inpatient services at Alta Bates/Summit Medical Center. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, the Mental Health Specialist develops and implements the program on the unit, leads and/or co-leads groups, participates in the development and implementation of multidisciplinary treatment plans and assists other professionals in providing care to patients on the units, The Mental Health Specialist participates in the development and implementation of multi-disciplinary of multidisciplinary plans and assists other professionals in providing care to patients on the units. The Mental Health Specialist acts as a resource and provides clinical guidance to new hires, mental health workers, students, interns, psychiatric technicians and licensed vocational nurses. The Mental Health Specialist participates in ensuring a safe environment on the units.
Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in the field of psychology, counseling psychology, social work, human development, health education, therapy, or closely related field required.
Minimum 12 months experience in a behavioral health care setting required. Must possess effective interpersonal skills. Must have a functional knowledge of psychiatric terminology, psychopathology, group therapy, psychotherapy, psycho educational processes, and DSM IV diagnostic criteria. Current BLS for Healthcare provider.
