Job Description College Aide IA (Freshman-Sophomore)

The Bureau of Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention identifies and assesses environmental and occupational health risks in New York City, and develops policies, programs and services to prevent environmental illnesses, injuries and death. The Bureau is comprised of four Programs - Healthy Homes, Environmental Health Assessment and Communications, Poison Control Center, and Injury and Violence Prevention. The mission of the Bureau of Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention is to prevent environmental disease and injury in homes, communities and the workplace, and to protect health by promoting healthy environments and health equity.

The Bureau of Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention in the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) is seeking part-time undergraduate students to work on a South Asian Lead Poisoning Prevention Awareness Campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the potential risk factors for lead poisoning and to promote lead poisoning prevention within New York City’s South Asian community.  The position will be based in lower Manhattan and will entail a considerable amount of field work.

Proposed Duties

-- Outreach to NYC’s South Asian community and provide lead poisoning prevention education in a culturally appropriate way.

-- Conduct literature reviews on emerging and established hazardous consumer products likely to be present in the NYC marketplace.

-- Conduct field surveys to identify potentially contaminated or mislabeled consumer products and assist with sample processing.
Minimum Qual Requirements For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
Preferred Skills -- Qualified candidates must be organized, detail-oriented, with good oral and verbal communication skills

--Fluency in one or more South Asian language (Urdu, Bengali, Hindi) is preferred

--Computer literacy and the desire to learn public health skills and competencies
